John Grabow
Jewish sports fans in Pittsburgh no doubt have been

New England via free agency. Who will be the favorite
son of the Jewish community here now?

Is the term student-athlete a misnomer? Given all the
recent scandals in big-time college sports, one would
certainly have reason to think so. Of course there are
several exceptions to the current trend. But many of
those exceptions go unreported due to their lack of
sensationalism.
Gabe Kapler
The life of a professional baseball player can be quite
stressful. There's all the travel, the pressure to perform
in a spotlight, your life constantly under a microscope,
the invitations to Bar Mitzvahs.

When people mention today's top Jewish athletes, Shawn
Green, Jay Fielder, Kerri Strug, Lenny Krayzelburg,

Reflections
by Michael Dittelman
Although Father's Day is not a Jewish holiday, no doubt
many Jews do celebrate the day by honoring their fathers
with gifts, hugs, and phone calls. In fact, Judaism
instructs us to honor thy mother and father every day
of our lives, always thanking them for their guidance,
love, and support.
Reflections on the Conflict in Israel
Fourteen years ago, I was in army basic training on
a base not far from the West Bank city of Ramallah.
On the day I was sworn into the Israel Defense Forces,
I was given an M-16 rifle and a Bible, in keeping with
the dictum of Rabbi Eliezer that "Sefer v'Sayif,
the Book and the sword, were given together from heaven".
Philly Loves Its Flashy Basketball Stars--Years Ago
They Were Jewish
Such stereotypes reflect a long tradition that goes
back more than seven decades, to the 1920s, when the
game first emerged from the ghettos of Philadelphia,
New York and Baltimore. Sportswriters then used to wax
about the flashy skills of hardscrabble "natural
athletes." Sounds familiar, except the stars then
had names like Dutch Garfinkel and Inky Lautman, and
the top teams were the Philadelphia Hebrews and the
Cleveland Rosenblums.
Passover and the Playoffs
Why was last Passover different from all other Passovers?
The answer: Saloniki, Greece.
For all of us who were in Israel at that time, the Passover
holiday was nearly overshadowed by the success of the
Israeli national basketball team, Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Memories of Jewish Ballplayers I have been an avid baseball
fan since my childhood. Growing up in Chicago, I had
opportunities to see the Cubs at Wrigley Field and White
Sox at Comiskey Park. While the success of those teams
was at best sketchy during that period, I did get to
see the best teams and players in each league as they
came into town.

They'll Always Go Together
On October 6, 1965, Sandy Koufax, the overpowering lefty
for the Los Angeles Dodgers, did not pitch in the first
game of the World Series against the Minnesota Twins
because game day fell on Yom Kippur.
A New Documentary Retells the 1972 Munich Massacre and
Reveals the Previously Untold Story of What Happened
The chain of events that led to the death of the Israeli
Olympic athletes, and the lack of an adequate response
to their capture, boggle the mind. As the documentary
conveys, the West German government failed to protect
the Israelis and utterly botched any plans to save them.
by Dr. Mitch Smith
Taking note of athletes who strive to reach their best,
we can find a message for each of us. The men and women
who took their place on the Olympic winners'podium made
their way there because of certain values, strategies
and practices which I believe can help all of us to
make life fuller, more joyful and more meaningful
